It looks like Heartlanders have found a new state to love after the brave elected officials in Alabama just passed legislation to protect children. State senators voted 23-4 to approve a measure that makes it a felony to give children puberty-blockers, hormone therapy, or gender reassignment surgery. The bill dubbed the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, sponsored by Republican Senator Shay Shelnutt (is that last name perfect or what?). The bill now heads to the state House of Representatives, which has already approved a companion bill.
Mr. Shelnutt said, “Children aren’t mature enough to make these decisions on surgeries and drugs, the whole point is to protect kids.” Let’s hope the state house passes it quickly and the Governor signs it into law.
Leftists and pro-transgender activists were reportedly outraged by the passage of the bill. When faced with the criticism that Republicans were “infringing” on the ability of people to make their own decisions, Shelnutt noted that the state bans minors from other substances, like alcohol and tobacco.
“I am sure those that oppose these procedures for children will be labeled transphobes. But this has nothing to do with supporting those with gender dysphoria. We just want to insure children are legal adults before they make life altering decisions. Hormone therapy and genital mutilation are not child’s play so to speak,” said Transylvania College gender studies professor, Ian Studmuffin.
It seems the south is on a roll. We have also seen strong leadership from:
Mississippi’s legislature. It just passed legislation prohibiting biological males from competing against women. The bill is labeled “protect female sports” and has wide approval within the state as well as nationwide. More states are also considering legislation along these lines.
Kentucky US Senator Rand Paul. He made a great point when questioning Biden appointee transgender Dr. Rachel Levine saying, “Dr. Levine, you have supported both allowing minors to be given hormone blockers to prevent them from going through puberty, as well as surgical destruction of a minor’s genitalia,” Paul, a Medical Doctor, pressed on noting the permanent effects of such measures. He cited a statistic from the American College of Pediatricians that “80 to 95 percent of pre-pubertal children with gender dysphoria will experience resolution by late adolescence if not exposed to medical intervention and social affirmation.”
Those of us in the heartland shake our heads that this type of leadership is even necessary. We had hoped that common sense and science would prevail. But that seems too much to ask of the modern left when it comes to sex and gender.
